Welcome to the Kilfinane Coshlea Historical Society's Website
A small group of interested people met at Davy's Cottage, Ballinvreena, Kilfinane Co Limerick on the night of 16 November 1999. There the Kilfinane Coshlea Historical Society was formed with the aim of researching and collecting local and family history within the barony of Coshlea and particularly in the areas around Kilfinane. The Barony of Coshlea situated in south-east County Limerick is bordered on the east by County Tipperary and on the south by County Cork. The barony covers an area of 148.8 square miles from Knocklong to Ballyorgan and from Effin to Galbally. For a list of the two hundred and nine townlands in Coshlea see https://www.townlands.ie/limerick/coshlea/#osm
The name Coshlea/CoisSleibhe (near the mountain) gives a clue to the landscape of the region. ‘in this barony there is a wide undulating plain of land of the first quality, bounded on two sides by high mountains’. The high mountains mentioned are the Ballyhoura and Galty Mountains on the southern and eastern sides respectively. The streams and rivers (the Sheep, the Farahy, the Ogeen, the Castlepook, the Loobagh and the Morning Star) which spring from the Ballyhoura mountains and hills eventually flow southwards into the Blackwater or northwards through part of the barony into the Shannon estuary.
Since the society was formed, we have produced six journals and erected a statue of John Flanagan, three-times World and Olympic Champion for Hammer-throwing. We have commissioned a series of replica urns and artifacts unearthed in the 1930's at the Bronze Age site Cush, Co Limerick. For the past number of years members of the society have been engaged in the 1911 Census Project which can be viewed on this website.
